A cold storage room is an insulated space where temperature and humidity levels are artificially controlled to preserve the freshness of specific products (especially food, medical supplies, chemicals, and agricultural products), extend their shelf life, and prevent spoilage.
 
To put it simply, it is the industrial-scale and much more technologically advanced version of our household refrigerators.
 
How Do Cold Storage Rooms Work?
Cold storage rooms operate by transferring the heat from the inside to the outside environment. This process fundamentally relies on the following main components and steps:
 
Compressor (Refrigeration Unit): The heart of the system. It compresses the refrigerant gas, increasing its pressure and temperature.
 
Condenser: It releases the heat of the high-pressure gas into the outside environment, converting the gas into a liquid state.
 
Evaporator (Indoor Unit/Cooling Fan): Placed inside the cold room. The liquid refrigerant absorbs the heat from within the room and evaporates; meanwhile, cold air is blown into the space via fans.
 
Polyurethane Panels: The walls, ceiling, and floor of the storage room are insulated with high-density polyurethane panels. This prevents outdoor heat from entering and indoor cold air from escaping.
 
Types of Storage Based on Temperature Ranges
Cold storage rooms are designed with different temperature ranges depending on their intended use and the products to be stored:
 
Cool Storage +8+15 Generally used for products that do not require very low temperatures, such as certain specialized medicines, bananas, citrus fruits, and chocolate.
 
Cold Storage (Chilled Preservation) -1+8Foods meant for short-to-medium-term consumption, such as fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, milk, and dairy products, are stored in this range.
 
Frozen Storage (-18-25 Designed for the long-term preservation of pre-frozen products (red meat, poultry, fish, frozen vegetables) without spoilage.
 
Shock Freezing Rooms (Blast Freezers) -35-40 Rather than a long-term storage area, these are transition rooms that freeze fresh products extremely fast without damaging their cellular structure. Once blast-frozen, products are moved to frozen storage rooms.
 
Why Are They Needed? (What Are the Advantages?)
Preserving Freshness: By slowing down microbial growth and chemical reactions, they ensure that food remains as fresh as the day it was harvested or produced.
 
Reducing Product Waste (Spoilage Rates): They prevent agricultural and livestock products from rotting, thereby protecting producers and distributors from financial losses.
 
Logistics and Supply Chain Flexibility: They allow products to be brought to market long after their harvest or production season (e.g., selling apples harvested in summer as fresh during winter).
